Shepshed Dynamo v SUFC

After defeat at home to Holbeach United on Easter Monday, Spalding United were only too aware that they could afford no more slip-ups if they were serious in their intent to achieve promotion from the UCL Premier Division at the end of this season. With their local rivals and close neighbours, seemingly in a near-unassailable position atop the pile, the best the Tulips can realistically hope for is to finish second to claim the automatic promotion spot they crave. Lying in third place before their trip to deepest Leicestershire on Tuesday 9th April 2013, several points behind second-placed St Ives Town but with 2 games in hand, the Tulips prepared to take on Shepshed Dynamo, a team rich in tradition but with currently little to play for but pride this season. In a strong showing, the Tulips strode to a seemingly comfortable 2-0 half-time lead but, as on numerous occasions before this season, they struggled to close out the game and it was the home side who dominated the second-half, scoring and coming very close to equalising which would surely have all but driven a nail into the promotion coffin. The final score was 2-1 to Spalding United thanks to first-half strikes by Jake Gibson and Michael Jacklin – more worryingly for the Tulips’ was the infliction of a serious calf injury to TJ Nightingale; surely they’ll need his goals as they prepare for the final stretch towards the season’s end?…
