Stewarts and Lloyds Corby v SUFC

After victory away at Yaxley last Tuesday in the UCL Knockout Cup Semi-Final, the Tulips were brought crashing back to earth when they lost 2-0 (again away from home) to Stewarts & Lloyds Corby on Saturday 20th April in their latest UCL Premier Division encounter. On an unyielding, sloping, sun-baked apology of a pitch, the match was played under brilliant sunshine throughout but there was to be no lasting afterglow for the Tulips following their trip to Northamptonshire. A goal in each half did them in right royally and, though they enjoyed considerable possession, had numerous quality attempts on goal and switched things around tactically midway through the second-half, they could not find a way past Corby’s giant and capable stopper, David Allen, who had a superb game. Disappointment at the defeat following the final whistle was tempered somewhat when news filtered through that promotion rivals St Ives Town had been involved in an even bigger shock result when they lost 3-1 at home to Newport Pagnell Town. The scenario now is simple for promotion-chasing Spalding United: 5 games left; 4 points behind their promotion rivals, St Ives Town; one game in hand – from here on in it’s a case of WIN, WIN, WIN!…
