On Bank Holiday Monday, 6th May 2013, Spalding United ended their 2012/13 season with an appearance in a showpiece occasion, the UCL Knockout Cup Final where they took on St Ives Town.
The Final was held at 3.00pm at the Focus Community Centre, home of Peterborough Northern Star FC and came hot on the heels of both teams going head-to-head in a race to secure the one promotion place available in the UCL Premier Division (clinched by St Ives after their 1-0 win at Shepshed Dynamo which ultimately rendered Spalding’s 3-0 win away at PNS moot as the lost out by a single point). After a memorable and eventful season on and off the pitch, Spalding United signed-off their campaign in fine style with a resounding 4-0 victory, putting behind them disappointments experienced earlier in the season against teams like Guernsey (who they lost 3-1 at home to in the FA Vase 5th Round on 9th February and title-winners, Holbeach United who they lost to twice in the league and also in the Lincs FA Senior Trophy Semi-Final on penalties, just four days before that painful defeat to Guernsey).
Pat Rayment’s talented young side surely have much more to offer next season but progress in 2013/14 will surely be aided by victory in the UCL Knockout Cup Final. The Cup Final proved to be a thrilling encounter between two fine teams. During league encounters between the two in 2012/13, St Ives Town won an early-season fixture at the Sir Halley Stewart Field 3-1 and the spoils were shared after a 1-1 draw at Westwood Road in a veritable game of two halves on a dreadful early March evening.
A bumper photogallery from this match signs off our 2012/13 coverage – what a way to end an eventful first season!! It’s been a fun, rollercoaster ride – let’s just hope the club goes from strength to strength following their great cup success: Well Played You Tulips!!!…
